Chill Master Notes

Mass hauntings are a nasty trick to play on your PC’s when they think they’ve seen everything.
Of course, they have already appeared in a number of Chill supplements, most notably "Isle of
the Dead". However, this take on them allows the CM to use them more as a single creature
than a disparate mass of ghosts inhabiting the same area, which should be more than enough to
blanch the skin of even the most experienced PC.

               Controlled Multiple Haunting

When running a haunting of this type, the CM needs to think about who the ghosts are, why
and how they died, and what the PC’s might do to get them to turn on their leader. Run the
individual spirits as common Ghosts (page 204 of the main rulebook), but feel free to add a
few more powerful spirits as well - run them as poltergeists (page 212 of the main rulebook),
but describe them as desperate or even unwilling. Having the spirit hissing "Go away! Please!"
while hurling things can be a disconcerting experience for envoys. Remember that these beings
are slaves of the dominating personality, a spirit that rarely enters the fray itself. These beings
are not much more powerful than the standard ghost by themselves, with the exception of a
monstrously high WPR score (around 150 on average) which allows them to dominate their
fellow spirits. The lead spirit should be played as intelligent and calculating - remember that it’s
fully aware of its situation and will do whatever it needs to in order to survive.

All the spirits in this type of haunting can be dealt with in the same fashion as the common
ghost, though eliminating the lead personality first will normally free the others. Again,
remember that the dominating spirit is completely aware of its vulnerabilities and will do
whatever it can to protect itself.

               Gestalt Haunting

This kind of haunting really has two components. First there are the individual ghosts, which are
generally the more aggressive or evil kind of spirit, such as Beisacs (p206), Doll Master
(p209), Hangman (p211) or Poltergeist-type ghosts, as above. These spirits, far from being
tormented souls, are usually homicidally insane, and co-operate willingly with the power that
commands them. Dangerous enough in themselves, these beings are only the heralds of a far
                       darker force.

The gestalt being itself is literally pure evil, condensed for years in the fabric of the haunting site.
The being appears as a creeping stain in the air, a cloud of nightmarish darkness that can cause
nausea and terror in all who gaze upon it. The cloud can extrude thin, whip-like tentacles to
grasp victims and pull them into its embrace, where it consumes them, making their spirit part
                       of it.

                  Notes:

Gestalt Hauntings feed on the life-energy of those it touches, bleeding the energy out of them at
a horrific rate. Victims passing through the cloud of darkness take Strike Rank 4 damage for
every round spent in it. Furthermore, those pulled into the cloud suffer SR 5 damage per round
until death, at which point the body disintegrates into ash. Victims can be pulled from the cloud,
or can escape themselves providing they can overcome the creature’s strength with an
                       opposed roll.

Gestalt Hauntings are always accompanied by a horde of lesser spirits, all of whom are
homicidally insane and follow the creature willingly.
